Dr. Nathan Good and Ira Rubinstein will be presenting their work on privacy and design at the Future of Privacy Forum’s Navigate event as well as holding a breakout session on October 12th at 9am during the conference entitled Tackling the Challenges of Privacy by Design.

Principal Nathan Good participated with Pam Dixon of the World Privacy Forum, Jules Polonetsky and Lia Sheena of the Future of Privacy Forum, Ron Soffer independant app developer, and Adam Towvim & Matt Tengler of Jumptap on September 13, 2012. The briefing was intended to further the NTIA-convened multistakeholder efforts to create a code of conduct for mobile application transparency.

Rushing to Install – Notice and Consumer Behavior

Back by popular demand, a video showcaseing users interaction with notice during an experiment looking at installation behavior. The study was published in the SOUPS conference in 2005, and was one of the first studies to look at the usability of notice during installation. For context, users were asked to configure a computer for a friend, and make various choices about what programs to install or not install. The rest, as they say, is history.

Web Privacy Census Released

Good Research released a joint report with UC Berkeley on online web trackers. The joint effort is meant to be the first in series of quarterly reports quantifying web trackers. The report is posted on UC Berkeley’s website at

Awarded PLSC/IAPP/Future of Privacy Forum’s Best Paper Award

Nathan Good of Good Research with coauthor Ira Rubinstein of New York University were awarded IAPP and the Future of Privacy Forums Best Paper Award for their paper Privacy by Design: A Counterfactual Analysis of Google and Facebook Privacy Incidents. Through case studies, the paper attempts to describe how privacy by design can work in practice. We are grateful and humbled by the support of our work by the PLSC community and look forward to presenting this work at IAPP at the end of the summer.

The Web Privacy Measurement conference gathers together researchers,practitioners and academics for two days at Berkeley.
